Malory Towers Boxset (Malory Towers)

Having read Enid Blyton as a child, this set was ideal to read with my daughter - if nothing else we can chat about how things have changed since the time when these were written. This being said children don't change so many of the things that happen still ring true even if boarding school is a rarity these days.

Reading the first book also shows a likely influence on Harry Potter - the school here is a big building, a boarding school and has four houses split into towers!

My 6 year old daughter was given the Malory Towers series. I didn't remember them from my own childhood and wasn't greatly looking forward to reading them - I thought they would be ridiculously old fashioned and badly written. I was wrong. Of course some of the language is a bit dated (things are "wizard" rather than "cool") but my daughter adores the stories and the characters and it doesn't matter that she'd never come across the concept of a boarding school or a governess before. I introduced my seven year old Grandson to Enid Blyton and he can't get enough of her books. He is a Californian who is now living in France so has no knowledge of England at any time. He doesn't care he loves the stories. They are not old fashioned to him they are just good tales. With CD's he can listen at any time instead of having to wait for bedtime for us to read to him.

I absolutely loved these books when I was a child, so when I had a baby daughter I couldn`t wait to buy them for her. She`s a bit too young to understand what I`m reading to her at the moment so I can`t tell you if she enjoys the stories but when I did read it to her I was a tiny bit disappointed that it didn`t seem quite as good as I remembered, but then things never do, do they! By the time I was 10 years old and a friend gave me this (first) Blyton book, I already had read hundreds of Swedish, American, French and German childrens books, good ones and boring ones, but "Five on a Trasure Island" was totally different.
I had read "Robinson Crusoe" before, but never had read anything about secret tunnels or small islands with castles on it.
Enid Blytons books inspired my imagination much much more than other books (even Astrid Lindgren or Arthur Ransome or Nesbitt) did.

I can't believe you can still get this amazing book! Whilst I'm not a complete fan of Ms Blyton, this and it's sequel 'The Wishing Chair Again' are in my top 10 of favourite books from my childhood - and that's a lot of books! It has all the classic ingredients - magic, fantasy, almost-but-not-quite too good to be true children, naughty magical folk such as elves, a mad witch and amazing places to visit! The Faraway Tree Collection

As a previous reviewer mentioned, the hardcover Egmont Books edition (ISBN 0603560733) of the "Faraway Tree Collection" has been heavily abridged. However, after comparing this edition with the newer "Politically correct" edition, it is not only the last 6 chapters of the "Faraway Tree" that got chopped but several middle chapters of the "Enchanted Wood" as well. The 20th chapter was also heavily cut to mask the gaps in the storyline caused by the editing.
