I am currently two thirds of the way through this book, and have thoroughly enjoyed it up until now. However disaster struck this morning when after page 353 the book reverted back to page 323, continued on for the next thirty or so pages with text I'd already read, and then jumped to page 387. I'm missing 30 pages, and things were just getting interesting. So, a warning to anyone buying this book - check before you read to save disappointment when you get there. Making Money (Discworld)

Reading this as the financial institutions of the real world totter and shudder made me wish that Moist von Lipwig had been around to run Lehman brothers. Its take on finance and economic modelling was very funny, though for me the funniest single moment was the reaction of Vetinari to - not to spoil the fun - the unexpected offer of dessert. A sparkling comic novel for our times...

This is a great well of knowledge of the sources that helped inspire many of the Discworld characters, motifs and situations. It's really wonderful to have so much secondary information on the series in one book, an encyclopedia-esque store of the kind of cultural tidbits that are fascinating in their own right as well as in relation to to Discworld. The Colour of Magic (Discworld Novel)

This is certainly not one to start the series with if you are new to Terry Pratchett - it is thematically quite different (which is understandable considering that it's the first of his Discworld books) and rather rough in parts. It's certainly one to read once you're familiar with the world, but you'd be better off starting with something like Mort or Soul Music to get a better flavour of what Discworld is all about.

Wintersmith

This has become one of my favourite books. I've always loved the "witches" series and the "nac mac feegle" who appear in Carpe Jugulum invaded my brain, kicked a few bottles around and dossed down.

This is, as others have said, the third in the "Tiffany Aching" series. I admit I enjoyed the first, wasn't too struck with the second (to start with), but with this one Pratchett is back to his best. It hooked me from the start.

I think this is a good starting point for anyone new to the series. Its plot makes you think of a Studio Ghibli film (in a good way, mind you) but Pratchett's humour sparkles as brightly as ever.

The Wit and Wisdom of Discworld

.........by its cover. Except in this case because not only is this book beautifully packaged but the contents are of the same high standard. It's been such a long time since I last read most of the Discworlds that most of these lovely snippets are unknown to me - and what a delight it is to read them again. I find that reading them isolated from their parent novels actually increases my awareness of their quality - and compels me to go back and read those novels again. Which is, I suppose, what is intended. Splendid.
