My kids - aged 2 and 4 - love the original Gruffalo story and ask to read it almost every bedtime. There was initial excitement when I brought this one home. But after a couple of readings they quickly stopped asking for it. If I suggest reading it now, they say "no, we want the first Gruffalo story".

this is the ultimate book for any young growing child. I heard this book when I was a kid and now I am doing the same to my own child, thats how much of a classic it is. this comes with a soft toy of a catterpillar which can weave in and out of the book to symbolise him eating an apple. What a versatile book, one which the primary bookshelf should not be without. The life story of a boy is told through the view through his window and follows the changes to his surroundings. Having no text the book is accessible to all age groups and abilities, offering plenty of scope for discussion and inspiration in literacy, PHSE, geography and art work.

We bought this book, published in 1971, when our 30 year-old was just 3 and it proved an enduring favourite for the whole family. It is one of the few books which our children insisted that we kept, even now, and one which we still catch them smiling at in their postgraduate gainfully employed maturity. The DVD might be good but little children deserve the fun of reading the book first with a grown-up to help them notice the delightful humour in the drawings. Don't hesitate - just buy it and enjoy it!
