I grew up on Asterix, reading tattered, well-thumbed editions from the local library, so when I saw these were being reissued in new editions I was curious whether I would still enjoy them as much as I did when I was a child. Needless to say I did and time has not aged these great tales!

Although I generally enjoyed the trilogy there was a steady decline as you read each book. Whereas the first book is excellent the reader may get sidetracked by Pullman's strong atheist views which start to get on your nerves. I feel he should have concentrated more on the story rather than his viewpoint. Saying that there are some nice parts in this last book and the ending is a good one for the trilogy.

As a teacher of secondary English I read a lot of literature, from older children's and young adult, through to 'Literature' with a capital 'L'. All Pterry's books are entertaining and worth a read, and I absolutely adore the 'Wee Free Men' books, as much as I like Pterry's recent 'adult' discworld novels. There is so much good writing out there aimed at teenagers, that it would be a shame to miss out just because we were born a decade too early. This is a wonderful adaptation. The acting is really great - the voices are perfect in my mind, particularly Lyra, Will, Mrs. Coulter, the gyptians...
