We bought this book, published in 1971, when our 30 year-old was just 3 and it proved an enduring favourite for the whole family. It is one of the few books which our children insisted that we kept, even now, and one which we still catch them smiling at in their postgraduate gainfully employed maturity. This is quite possibly the most meticulously detailed and expertly crafted pop-up book I have ever seen. It is my daughter's "special book" and can only be browsed with Mummy or Daddy at her side - basically because it is an absolute masterpiece, plus it delights both adults and children alike. Though the story is obviously abridged, it is still very detailed and makes the ultimate bedtime story - a page a night perhaps.

Apart from the Americanisms (diaper) and the fact the illustration does show an old fashioned 'po' as opposed to a potty - this book is fabulous. One read of it and my very resistant son was sitting on the potty with his clothes on which no amount of bribery had encouraged him to do before, a day later and another read of the book and he was sitting on the potty with no nappy on and understanding what he was supposed to do - still waiting for him to do it now but an excellent start after only 48 hours of receiving ... Whenever its time for a bedtime story I always pick this book out (I think the kids might be getting a bit sick of it!) The wording is beautiful and I really love the ending, such a nice simple message for children about unconditional love. Pictures are great too.

I have these stories as a boxed set and they are fantastic. Always a favourite a bedtime. They have now passed onto my 3 year old who likes to join in with the story and also look for the duck on each page.
We have loads of children's books by Usborne and I have not been disappointed yet. They always seem to be perfect for the age range they are aimed at.

As someone returning to German and trying to brush up on lost vocabulary I am finding this useful, even though it's clearly a kid's book. It's just more fun to sit browsing through this of an evening, rather than scrolling through long lists of vocab. More useful, I would imagine, in a classroom situation, as the large pictures would surely make for great Q and A sessions... direct the postman to the post office.... tell the little girl where her dog is.... describe what's under the window etc etc etc...
