I introduced my daughter to this book a month ago when she was 9 months old, and it is by far her favourite book. She crawls over to it and lobs other books out of the way to get to it, and then happily sits turning the pages and opening and closing the flaps, she can't get enough of it no matter what time of day it is, although we also read it every night before bed as well. This is a charming and entertaining entry in the 'Charlie and Lola' series, and one which has particular significance for preschool-age children in the run-up to starting at 'big school'. I first bought a copy of this title in 2005, when one of the preschoolers I work with was showing significant signs of distress about starting school. I was keen to buy a book that would help my three year to not only learn the letters of the alphabet but to also learn the sounds using phonics as well. I thought buying this book would help. Instead, I found the characters dry and the plot of each story tiresome.

Each sound has the letter written in black and white with arrows showing the way the word is to be written, which is helpful. Then in the margin, there are examples of words to match the letter sounds- but they are tiny. Hard to see let alone read. And I don't mean ... Read More:

I bought this book for my 13 year old, what a well written funny book. It is written in an informative yet relaxed way that most normal teenagers will understand. Although we have a relaxed approach to answering sex questions there are some things a teenage boy just cant ask his parents, this book filled in the gaps. Buy it !

I've never given a bad review, however out of all the books my 3 year old has this has got to be the worst....yes the pictures are good - but the use of the word 'bad baby' doesnt sit with me well....Why are we saying the baby was 'bad'? Because he didnt say thank you or pay? I really think there are lots of books out there for children which make better use of the English language than this one...bad baby - it's awful!

Plot: The kind BFG is the only giant who does not eat children like all the other giants but actually horrible snozzcumbers. He catches all the dreams and gives them to children. Sophie caught the friendly giant at his lovely act but she had to be taken because no one was to know of his kindness or even his existence!

An amazing fact about the book connected with the author: The BFG's friend Sophie was named after Dahl's granddaughter, the real Sophie. She was the only member of Roald Dahl's family whose name was mentioned in one of his books.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great little book. It keeps my daughter occupied for hours on end. Just a quick flick through it is enough to convince any adult that a small child will like it. Simplistic, enjoyable and charming. And actually quite funny.
Well recommended for very small kids.

Quite possibly the best "how-to-draw" book ever written! Got me restarted on art after an absence of many years. And Quentin Blake is just a genius!
Don't be fooled into thinking this is a kid's book as I almost was. Kids can already draw like this, it's only adults who have forgotten how.
I buy this book as a gift for all my friends and they all love it.
