Having read Enid Blyton as a child, this set was ideal to read with my daughter - if nothing else we can chat about how things have changed since the time when these were written. This being said children don't change so many of the things that happen still ring true even if boarding school is a rarity these days.

Reading the first book also shows a likely influence on Harry Potter - the school here is a big building, a boarding school and has four houses split into towers!

I am not very familiar with picture books. They are not what I grew up on and am more often than not repulsed by the sort of illustrations they, well the modern ones tend to have. They are grotesque and often just insulting to a child's intelligence really. If you don't know this story, it's about a couple of skeletons and a dog skeleton that live in a dark, dark cellar and venture out to scare people during the dead of night.
Not a very good story for a bedtime reader you might think!

This is a sad day for Rupert, Stuart Trotter's drawings are just not good enough after John Harrold's beautiful and detailed artwork. Harrold was a worthy successor to Tourtel and Bestall. I hope a new artist can be found to rescue Rupert, or bring back John Harrold.
In the meantime if you want to buy a great Rupert Annual for this Christmas get the 1963 facsimile produced this year and see just how enchanting a real Rupert Annual can be.

Quite possibly the best "how-to-draw" book ever written! Got me restarted on art after an absence of many years. And Quentin Blake is just a genius!
Don't be fooled into thinking this is a kid's book as I almost was. Kids can already draw like this, it's only adults who have forgotten how.
