Like Northern Lights, I found this a bit of a slow starter, but once it gets going you suddenly realise the sheer breadth and scope of the trilogy's vision - huge!

A lot more adult in tone than Northern Lights, which made for a better reading experience for me. This book also starts to deal with some very adult themes, such as death, religion and authority.

I am really surprised that this book has not been reviewed before. I have used all of the books in the Key Stage 2 range and recommended them to every school I have worked in. The reason being they are clear, differentiated and offer good practise in consolidation of topics. You can supplement your NNS round them. They are fantastic.

Another brilliant installment from the Great JK Rowling !
Gets better with each book as we are led further into the wonderful world of magic ! Great to find out about the other Wizarding Schools of Beaubatons & Durmstrang and loved Viktor Krum !
a bit darker than the rest but it has to move on a bit now they are all getting older !

Be prepared for one of the most exciting page-turning reads you'll ever encounter. This book will grip you from the first page and not let you go until the end. It's the longest of the four Sally Lockhart books, but you won't notice the length as the plot just keeps going and thickening all the time.

As if that wasn't enough, in between the excitement there's also a wealth of incidental detail about social conditions in Victorian England, and especially about the rights (or lack thereof) of women.

I think this is a better version of these ancient legends than is the companion Orchard Book of Greek Myths, though the writer and illustrator remain the same. The text here is fuller and less summarized. The ills, though improved on Greek Myths, still for me have a patronising hint to them, as if to suggest that young children today have to everything spelled out to them so they don't get bored or misunderstand. The ills are neither in ancient mode nor modern, but inhabit a bit of an uneasy, jokey limbo between the two styles.

Who would deliberately lure somebody on to treacherous rocks on the Cornish coast? Somebody is flashing lights from the old tower on stormy nights--and the Famous Five sense danger.
