by: Roald Dahl

November 01, 2005
Roald Dahl's voice is a delight. A refreshing change from the modern obsession for sound effects and other over-the-top techniques that, apparently, are added to capture a child's attention.

My two children listen to Dahl's audio CDs and read his books constantly. They enjoy many other styles of reading and story telling but I do believe Dahl has a special place in their hearts - and mine!

by: Roald Dahl

September 06, 2007
Plot: The kind BFG is the only giant who does not eat children like all the other giants but actually horrible snozzcumbers. He catches all the dreams and gives them to children. Sophie caught the friendly giant at his lovely act but she had to be taken because no one was to know of his kindness or even his existence!

An amazing fact about the book connected with the author: The BFG's friend Sophie was named after Dahl's granddaughter, the real Sophie. She was the only member of Roald Dahl's ... Read More:

by: Anthony Horowitz

April 01, 2005
This was a really fun book that I will recommend on to many readers, young and old alike. I had heard many good things about Anthony Horowitz and I was not to be disappointed. His pace of storyline is excellent and his characters are wonderfully developed. The villains are as colourful as any created by Ian Fleming and the background for the evil plot was well thought out. The actual diabolic plan and described results were in fact highly unrealistic, but that did not matter one iota to this gold nugget of ... Read More:

by: Enid Blyton

September 01, 2006
Having read Enid Blyton as a child, this set was ideal to read with my daughter - if nothing else we can chat about how things have changed since the time when these were written. This being said children don't change so many of the things that happen still ring true even if boarding school is a rarity these days.

Reading the first book also shows a likely influence on Harry Potter - the school here is a big building, a boarding school and has four houses split into towers!

If you don't know this story, it's about a couple of skeletons and a dog skeleton that live in a dark, dark cellar and venture out to scare people during the dead of night.
Not a very good story for a bedtime reader you might think!
In fact, the story is very funny and not at all scary and so makes an excellent bedtime reader. It also makes an excellent early reader, because as well as the story narrative, the skeletons engage in some very funny dialogue and jokes in the pictures. These can only be appreciated ... Read More:

by: Philip Pullman

November 04, 2004
I bought this Pullman book thinking it might be suitable for my 10 yr old daughter. She is doing a project on China so I thought it might bring in an interesting aspect on Chinese culture, as the main character is a Chinese girl called Lila.- Not only did the prose not live up to it's review status, I was shocked to discover that the imagery and moral values are totally unsuitable for young children.(The book has been recommended for 8 year olds and up).
Pullman's main push in his book seemed to be to subtly yet profoundly ... Read More:

by: Terry Pratchett

September 27, 2007
This has become one of my favourite books. I've always loved the "witches" series and the "nac mac feegle" who appear in Carpe Jugulum invaded my brain, kicked a few bottles around and dossed down.

This is, as others have said, the third in the "Tiffany Aching" series. I admit I enjoyed the first, wasn't too struck with the second (to start with), but with this one Pratchett is back to his best. It hooked me from the start.

Pratchett's talent and skill is in the folklore and the facts which he uses in the books, ... Read More:

This thing, the deathly hallows, the beginning wasn't the best beginning, but... I could not stop reading it. I don't understand why people think the ending is disappointing. The Nineteen years later could be expanded into a book, maybe, but, if J.K doesn't then that's all we really need to know to end the Harry potter phenomenon. Hopefully she will deliver another H.P book, because I know, I know, it won't end here.

I recently bought this for my daughter after spotting it in Marks and Spencers. I earned a few strange looks with my mini squeal of delight, but nevermind! I had completely forgotton about this book until seeing it again, and the memories flooded back as I read the story to my daugher. The simple story will delight any child, but for me, the drawings made the book. A must!!
