This is a book of its time and I challenge any modern reader to not to experience a cringe at some of the attitudes expressed on its pages. Credit where it is due - a marvellous story - but some of these children are quite horrible little snobs by 21st century standards.

I've been a big fan of Dickens since reading David Copperfield about six years ago. Bleak House, which was the immediate follow-up to Copperfield, is not one of his best books.
Firstly, what happened to Dickens sense of humour, which went AWOL in Bleak House? There are some half-hearted attempts at comedy but they mostly fall flat. The warmth present in the best passages of Copperfield is also missing, though Dickens' notorious sentimentality is rampant.

This was my first Austen novel and I really enjoyed it. Although at first, (being a woman of the 21st centruy!)I did find myself wanting to shout at the women for being so shy/well behaved all the time, I did remind myself it was written 200 years ago when things were different and found myself getting caught up in the writing. Once you read it in context it is very enjoyable with characters to love and hate and becomes a complusive read that you can't help but love

My daughter insisted on reading this book in bed every night for a couple of weeks until she had finished it. She loved it, and it gave her a great confidence in her reading ability and showed her that reading can be a real joy not a chore.

It is written in a style that is just right for her now: relatively simple words and sentences, but put together in a way that paints a vivid fantasy picture.
