Stand and Deliver.......Your Money or your Life....

"The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor
And the highwayman came riding-
Riding-riding
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn door..."

With a powerful introduction like this, you must read on.... The Highwayman (by Alfred Noyes) tells a tragic tale of doomed ... Read More:

by: E.M. Forster, David Lodge

April 27, 2006
This was perhaps my first real introduction to literature, apart from "1984", the inevitable smart-schoolboy read, and "Sons And Lovers". As such it was a revelation - Forster's empathy, subtlety, lyricism and chracterisation are magnificent, while being oddly inobtrusive. There are no verbal pyrotechnics as you might find in DH Lawrence or Virginia Woolf, but a deeper vision of life that was wonderful to encounter at 15.

Forster's writing trajectory had led him to be able to write a ... Read More:

Mr. Toad, Ratty, Mr. Badger, and Mole are among the many creatures and characters who inhabit Grahame's version of Victorian era England. He weaves their riverbank life and many adventures in magical yet universally appealing style. A great literary classic who will appeal to children and adults alike.
Adrian Praetzellis offers an excellent reading of the novel for librivox.org

Seriously they called it 7000 names and then went through the Bible, shakespear and then invented the rest of them. it should be renamed 7000 names that could lead to your child being seriously bullied, Why would you name your child, Gentilis!!! If you want to make your child hate you and save yourselves the price of this book go to Wikipedia and look up Bible names.

by: Mary Norton

October 28, 1993
The Borrowers is about Pod and Homily and the thirteen-year-old Arrietty, a family of tiny people, just a few inches high, who live under the floorboards of an old country house in England. They exist and furnish their tiny home by "borrowing" scraps and oddments from the house above. To do this they have to go on daring raids to gather the items they need. The author makes it quite clear that this is not stealing, as the Borrowers only take items that would otherwise be neglected or thrown away. Mary Norton invented ... Read More:

Very good beginners book - I'd never spoken Welsh before, my family comes from Wales and so I thought I'd give it a go. As one of the previous viewers says; listen to this a few times and you suddenly find you can count, name colours, say hello. All very basic but you do need to start somewhere.

I found the layout of the book really approachable as well. I've always found learning languages difficult and the cartoon approach means that there are no dense lists of words or grammar to scare you off! I would imagine this ... Read More:

by: Thomas Hardy

Hardy examines the difficulties in the life of a women and explores the inner feelings of Tess during the events that happened to her. The novel brings you the ages old question of fate and free will and he left it on the reader to decide if they really are free in this world to live the life as they want to.

An excellent novel that still can be related to the situation of women in today's society. We believe that women is now independent and liberated from the burdens of social nomrs and is now living according to her free ... Read More:

Be aware that you are purchasing a CD and not a book. This is not made clear on the descriptions or details given for the item. I got a real shock when I opened my parcel and discovered it wasn't a book. Thankfully I know my niece will like it anyway. Otherwise it's quite a good item.

by: Eva Ibbotson

July 04, 2008
I read Company of Swans years ago before discovering Ibbotson's wonderful novels for children, and was amazed by how much I remembered. She really is several cuts above the usual kind of romance writer, being steeped in culture (music especially) and a sense of character that bring her closer to the ideal world of Jane Austen than the deplorable vogue for chick lit.
Set in the Edwardian era, the novel follows the adventures of Harriet, daughter of a grim and joyless Cambridge professor (academics are always awful in Ibbotson's world)who ... Read More:

I've been waiting for this version to come out on CD for a long time. My tapes, both sets, have worn out! I will never tire of listening to this, despite the fact that I scorn most children's literature nowadays! David Jason's Toad is a complete joy, conniving, self-pitying but loveable all the same, just like Toad should be. This version is atmospheric, funny, beautifully acted and 'comfort' listening of the first order. Forget the modern world and all its PC ways. Sit back and listen and pretend everything's alright - just for awhile...
