The writer and artist manage to paint a vibrant picture of a steam punk London post HG Wells War Of The Worlds with government skullduggery that readers of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen would appreciate.

The comic touches on issues like the price of technology and the divide between north and south in the UK through an industrial age grim stained looking glass.

I can highly recommend it.

The Black Island was published as a black & white book in 1938, then in 1943, the very same B/W drawings were coloured with only one frame added. Then, in 1965, on his British publishers' request, Herge had to re-draw the whole book modernizing and changing every frame, creating the common book we grew up with. In this 1943 original, you get to see the all-Herge vision of Tintin's deeds in Britain, unlike the 1965 version which was largely drawn by his associates in "Studio Herge".

The main curiosity of this adventure (a typicall TINTIN adventure affair à la 39 steps...) is the fact the original was full of "mistakes"... and HERGE, always the perfectionist, gave us the present edition which is one full of more modern cars, trains and planes... and better police uniforms!.

I am glad I kept both editions in my collection!
