This book is one of the lasting memories of my childhood and luckily I still have the same copy from back then that I can now read to my own children. My youngest is 2 and she sometimes lacks the patience to wait for me to read all the text before jumping ahead to the next page but the charming illustrations enable her to have a good grasp of the story anyway. Lots of these newer Charlie and Lola books are spin offs from the television series, and aren't written by Lauren Child at all. Sometimes this doesn't matter, as the series and the books do try to stay as close to the original books as possible, and with good reason, they work.

My nearly three year old boy insists on 'the Dogger book' every single night. And it is one of the few on his shelf that I dont mind reading again and again. Its a lovely story with a generous dose of drama and suspense - and a morality tale thrown in for good measure. The pictures are fantastic - lots of new little details to find with every read.

I love this book and all the other ones in this series because the illustrations are so great, very sweet, but incredibly bright and colourful at the same time, they really catch my babies' attention. They are also hardcover which is great for younger children because they cant tear (or eat) the pages and they can start to try and turn the pages themselves rather than have to sit there and be good in case the book gets all torn!
