Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace [1999]

starring: Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Pernilla August
directed by: George Lucas

September 20, 2005
OK where to start on this truly horrific crime of a film?

Jar Jar Binks may actually be the worst character in the history of cinema - all those animators and actors who worked to realise this affront to human decency should find a revolver and do the decent thing.

Why do all American kids have problems talking properly? Do they think that speaking like a cutesy 3 year old makes them endearing? Jake whatshisname (Anakin) should never ever be allowed in front of a camera ... Read More:

The Phantom Menace is boring. The final sabre fight between Obi Wan, Qui Gon and a Sith lord is the only part worth watching. Attack of the Clones is a "we're back in business" film, which as the times go by, has come to be a fine B-class. Revenge of the Sith could've been better. There's too much fire in the background and too many talented actors playing puppets. I think that George, opposite to what he's saying, has got something to do about it yet:)

I'd been wanting to see this film for ages but never got around to it, i bought it about a week and a half ago, looking at the reverse i was schoked at the fact that it was 3 hours long! I have a really short attention span, and it was also in black and white, which i thought would put me off. Usually i watch films and work through them or talk to friends nose around on teh computer etc but after watching about half an hour of this film i couldn't tear myself away, i completely neglected my laptop for the ... I watch this movie before I watched the original Batman (I know I'm a bit behind), and I actually enjoyed the move better. The story follows a similar path to the first Spiderman film in that it's takes you back to where it all began. It works well and Christian Bale is awesome.

As a Blu-ray, the experience only gets better...

Excalibur [1981]

starring: Nigel Terry, Helen Mirren, Nicholas Clay, Cherie Lunghi, Paul Geoffrey
directed by: John Boorman

May 15, 2000
John Boorman's 1981 film is an exercise in how to treat fantasy in an adult and serious manner.
The fantasy elements are subtle - there are no stop motion monsters to be found here - and yet still pervade the movie with a sense of the magical & arcane. This film in no way attempts a realistic approach to the extent of 2004's King Arthur.
Merlin as portrayed here is dark & ambiguous, constantly aware of the end of the time of magic & the old gods. A very eccentic performance by the
excellent Nicol ... Read More:

The thing is,when you give reviews on a thing. You can only ever give a true account,as you see a thing yourself. This will be 7 times I have bought this DVD,as the first 6 were gifts, and I never got any complaints back from them. I notice that a few who have reviewed this DVD,have had a problem with the actors,(how they sound,or how they put it over). Well I can understand that,in a way.But if you can manage to look beyond all that, you will be able to enjoy a piece of Irelands history. I think it's a masterpiece on film, for those ... Read More:

Seraphim Falls [2007]

You know where you are when a movie gets glowing reviews from the Daily Star and Daily Mirror.

Seraphim Falls certainly doesn't disappoint, living so far down to expectations that it may well rate some kind of Worst Movie of 2007 Award. But then, it was rushed out onto DVD in a hurry, and seemingly amidst so much embarrassment that the DVD transfer is even worse than the theatrical release itself.

Looking at the outset like a potentially interesting entry from a student film maker for The Sundance festival, Seraphim ... Read More:

This Batman film just shows that the who idea still works. Quite frankly, after the Michael Keaton/Val Kilmer/George Clooney efforts I was beginning to have my doubts.

Sure, there are one or two places where this film may be a bit slow, but on the whole I think that even those patches serve the purpose of explaining how Batman became Batman ... i.e. why the Bat bit. As always the gadgets are brilliant, the one liners excellently delivered and Batman's escapes truly unbelievable - in other words a proper Batman film!
