Mr Benn - The Complete Series

starring: Mr Benn, Ray Brooks
directed by: David McKee

October 10, 2005
Mr Benn is easily one of my favourite children's programmes, short and simple but also magical and truly unforgettable. I never realised that only 14 episodes were made though, maybe it is because time goes a lot slower as a child, that and the fact that by the time an episode was repeated, I must have thought it was a brand new episode but anyway, quality will always be more important than quantity plus it is proof that Mr Benn has great replay value.

Another great thing about Mr Benn ... Read More:

Carry On Abroad [1972]

starring: Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims, Bernard Bresslaw
directed by: Gerald Thomas

February 17, 2003
This is definately my favourite of all of the Carry On Films. It is laughter from the moment it starts.
Kenneth Williams as Stuart Farquhar is fantastic especially when Peter Butterworth as the Spanish Hotel owner says 'Stupid What? when he first introduces his name.
Joan Sims and Sid James as husband and wife are hysterical and the scene where Sid smashes through the patio window when he thinks it hasnt got any glass in it, is superb........Joan Sims laughter really makes that scene and its so contageous. ... Read More:

The Knack And How To Get It [1965]

starring: Rita Tushingham, Ray Brooks, Michael Crawford, Donal Donnelly
directed by: Richard Lester

August 02, 2004
I don't understand why this film gets unfavourable reviews on Amazon. I didn't like it when I first saw it on TV in the seventies (I missed it at the cinema being under-age) but it has become one of my favourite films since. It has the greatest of John Barry's great film scores, superb black and white photography, Rita Tushingham at her best, wonderful shots of mod London, and it is very wittily filmed. It is based on a theatre play which has transferred to the screen perfectly and it is inspired by the French New Wave. ... Read More:

The Flesh And Blood Show [1972]

starring: Jenny Hanley, Ray Brooks, Judy Matheson, Candace Glendenning, Robin Askwith
directed by: Pete Walker

July 21, 2008
The Flesh And Blood Show concerns a group of actors who are rehursing a play in an old abondoned seaside theatre at the end of a pier. The theatre has a sinister secret from its past and the actors start to vanish one by one.

The problem with this film is it's very very dull. The plot moves at such a slow pace and there are none of the characteristic gory killings which we expect to see in a Pete Walker film. The print is in 1.85 widescreen but is so dark and grainy you can hardly see what's happening. There is no commentary track ... Read More:

H.M.S. Defiant [1962]

starring: Alec Guinness, Dirk Bogarde, Maurice Denham, Nigel Stock, Richard Carpenter
directed by: Lewis Gilbert (II)

March 18, 2002
Anyone who likes iron men fighting in wooden ships against the French, with the roar of cannon and splinters flying everywhere, will enjoy the last half of Damn the Defiant!. Whether you enjoy the first half depends on how well you appreciate the almost psychopathic cruelty and condescension of First Lieutenant Scott-Padget (Dirk Bogarde).

It's 1797, Napoleon threatens Britain, and only the Royal Navy ensures Britain's freedom. Captain Crawford (Alec Guinness) takes command of H.M.S. Defiant, a single-gun-deck frigate. Also joining ... Read More:

July 24, 2006
It's been a long time since I bought a series on dvd and enjoyed it as much (if not more!) than I did when it was originally broadcast on tv. I can't help feeling that the programme makers made this in such a way that, with it's mixture of humour and sadness, you almost felt part of it and just kept cheering Robbie on to the finale. But it is the FINALE that we are unlikely to ever witness. In fact, unless we can convince "2 Entertain" to change their minds, they have told me that there are NO plans at present for any further releases. Why oh why, with ... Read More:

I watched Cathy Come Home on dvd just last night and simply had to give it a 5 star Amazon rating.
I can't even begin to say how much this affected me, the importance of this television drama even today cannot be understated and it will stay with you long after. It has to be one of the most heartbreaking british films ever made. Beautifully acted by all, you just hope all the way through that everything for Cathy and her children will be allright. I came to this as a person not even alive when this was made, and watched it not really knowing the story that ... Read More:
