Oliver! (Special Edition) [1968]

starring: Mark Lester, Oliver Reed, Harry Secombe, Ron Moody
directed by: Carol Reed

November 12, 2007
Simply put, Oliver! is one of the greatest musicals of all time. It is filled with memorable songs - "Food Glorious Food", "Oliver!", "Consider Yourself" and "Oom-Pah-Pah" to name just a few - and equally memorable characters.

The film is a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel and much like the story of Oliver Twist itself, it is a perfect family film. There are some frightening moments - the villain Bill Sykes played by Oliver Reed is scary enough on his own - but overall, ... Read More:

Agatha Christie's Miss Marple Collection - Murder Ahoy / Murder At The Gallup / Murder Most Foul (4 Discs) (Box Set) (DVD)

starring: Margaret Rutherford, Lionel Jeffries, Ron Moody, Charles Tingwell, James Bolam
directed by: George Pollock

February 02, 2004
Academy award winning Dame Margret Rutherford is properly one if not the best loved eccentric actress of the post war cinema.

At the age of nearly 70, she first played the film role with which she was most often associated in later life, that of Miss Marple. In a series of four films (1961-1964) - loosely based on the novels of Agatha Christi - Margaret's portrayal of Miss Maple captured audiences worldwide now and then. . She took great umbrage when she learned that Christie herself had ... Read More:

I remember really enjoying this when I was a kid so I rented it for my children to see (3 boys aged 8,7 & 7 and a girl aged 4) but I didn't expect them to enjoy it quite as much as they did. They are now driving me mad singing Bachelor Boy almost non-stop but they loved the whole thing. The adventure of travelling around in a bus, the singing and dancing, the fun of "Fagin" doing his mime and the near-wedding to the poor Yugoslav girl - I'd forgotten quite how good it was and the children are really disappointed ... Another award-winning performance from the great Peggy Mount! This is a brilliant comedy from the early 60s with an all-star cast.

Robert Morley plays a down-on-his-luck Colonel who employs a char lady (Peggy Mount) who also happens to work as char for a big company. Quite by chance she stumbles upon some valuable information regarding stocks and shares - she, along with her other char lady associates begin to make lots of money!

This is hilarious and gets you chuckling within minutes! ... Read More:

You know this classic story by now of the boy who asked for more...Oliver Twist played touchingly in the best version on celluloid by Mark Lester...He is one of many workhouse orphans lead by the authoritarian Mr Bumble (Harry Secombe) who decides to sell Oliver to a local Funeral Director in the form of (Leonard Rossiter) of Rising Damp fame. Oliver escapes from here after a fight only to find himself making his way to 19th Century London where he befriends "The Artful Dodger" (Jack Wild) a steetwise pick pocket who takes Oliver ... Well I could vaguely remember the 'labyrinth' part of the title, which got me here, and absolutely amazed to find it. I must have been about 10 years old when I watched this and I still remember "a second can be a very long time".

Strange memories of this a bit like "Sapphire and Steel" for my peers as well I think.Well done to those people who have got around to releasing it, only 24 years after it first aired on TV!
Can't wait for it to land on the doormat.

I bought Annie for my 3 year old niece as we are having great joy introducing her to musicals, she has watched Annie countless times and loves it however it is a great shame that as soon as anyone starts singing the subtitles stop! as her mother is hard of hearing it prevents her from telling my niece what they are singing. The film still brings joy to us all but we won't watch it as often as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or Grease because we can't all join in.
