I really didn't like this film. I found it a bit boring and overall a bit too cheesy. It was a disappointment because the book was so good. Usually if I like a film, I watch it more than once but this one I really didn't want to see it again. I would rather read the book again. Maybe this film just wasn't my cup of tea, it may be good for other people.

I agree this is as good now, if not better than when it was first made. The only downside is that because it was not shot on film the tape stock has not lasted very well. That said it is what is on there that is more important and this is, without doubt one of the best TV series ever made.

If you have never seen it treat yourself. Watch it all in one go. Such larks.

This is a wonderful film especially for all those who have a 10-year-old horse-mad daughter! Elizabeth Taylor`s portrayal of a girl who has an ambition to win the Grand National is very convincing and gives a preview of her great acting ability. The family life is quite authentic and the viewer is made to feel that they are actually "dropping-in" on a family discussion. They appear as very pleasant people, although one feels the film could have done without "Butch" Jenkins, who seems a little trying!

If, like me, you are an 'old romantic', hate growing old and are deeply sentimental you will love this film. While I have to agree that some of the acting and direction is a little 'stagey', the brilliance of the story, the extremely beautiful garden scenes, the realistic period costumes and the wistful and enchanting music win through overall. The premise for this movie is good. Even the characterisation is not bad, however, the plot seems to have large periods of meandering without purpose. Having built a fantastic set, created a wonderful villain, the crew of heroes are fairly bland and characterless. Also some of the dialogue could be tightened. Not as fun as some other films from the era (Battlestar Galactica, Flash Gordon) but with an interesting premise. Definitely recommended for fans of 2001 - a Space Odyssey, although it achieves nothing of the intensity of that movie.
